The Schoeps MK 4 is a highly popular, small-diaphragm condenser microphone capsule known for its transparent, natural sound and excellent cardioid (heart-shaped) pickup pattern, offering strong rear rejection while maintaining consistent directionality across frequencies, making it a versatile "problem-solver" for studio and live voice/instrument recording, often paired with Schoeps CMC preamps.
Polar Pattern: Classic cardioid, which offers maximum attenuation of sound at 180° (up to 30 dB) and 6 dB attenuation at 90° lateral incidence.
Frequency Response: A flat frequency response across the spectrum, with a slight, natural increase at 10 kHz that helps compensate for high-frequency losses when recording in a room.

Key Functions & Features:
Power Solution: It powers Colette capsules (like MK series) when a recorder or transmitter can't provide phantom power (P48).
Unbalanced Output: Converts the capsule's signal to an unbalanced output, often via a 3.5mm mini-jack, ideal for cameras or DAT recorders.
Modular Design: Attaches to various Colette capsules (cardioid, hypercardioid, etc.) to create a tailored microphone.
Battery & External Power: Runs on a 6V silver oxide battery (up to 80 hours) or can be externally powered.

Portable Recording: Allowed high-quality condenser mics to be used with portable DAT recorders and early digital devices that lacked balanced inputs and phantom power.
