Research Scientist – Photodetector Technology
SINTEF Digital is searching for Research Scientist – Photodetector Technology
Join our team to develop sensors of the future!
SINTEF Microsystems and Nanotechnology MiNaLab is a leading provider of R&D and fabrication services in silicon-based microsystems, including feasibility studies, device design, process development, process integration, process, and device simulation, prototyping and small-scale production. We work in close collaboration with national and international companies and research organizations to develop state-of-the-art and tailor-made sensors and actuators used in a wide range of application areas such as aviation and space, consumer electronics, scientific, medical and industrial instrumentation, renewable energy, production monitoring and industrial sorting, biomedical and environmental technology. We have dedicated research groups covering the fields of Radiation detectors, MEMS, Microoptics, BioMEMS, Medical Sensors and Piezoelectric Microsystems.
SINTEF MiNaLab has over 50 years of experience in research, development, and production of custom silicon radiation detectors and photodetectors, earning a prestigious reputation in the field. Our team has successfully developed and manufactured silicon radiation detectors - including particle detectors, X-ray detectors, and photodetectors spanning the UV to NIR spectral range - for some of the most demanding applications in scientific experiments (e.g. CERN, synchrotrons, XFELs) as well as in industry.
SINTEF MiNaLab has also established a strong expertise in design and fabrication of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) using SiN and AlOx, over recent years, and has now become a partner in the Chips JU initiative “Photonics for Quantum (P4Q)” as a provider of waveguides and modulators based on AlN and PZT technologies. SINTEF MiNaLab aims to expand its activities on scalable and integrable single photon detectors covering the spectral range from UV to SWIR in conjunction with the growing activities of the department in PICs towards realization of integrated photonics for emerging quantum applications.
We are a highly innovative environment with strong focus on bringing technology from concept stage to market in close cooperation with industry and research institutions across the world, as well as through commercialization of our own technology via licensing and spin-offs.
We are now looking for a Research Scientist with expertise in Photodetector Technology.
We are seeking a candidate with experience and interest in development of photodetectors such as avalanche photodetectors (APD) and single-photon avalanche photodetectors (SPAD) based on silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), or other semiconductor materials. The successful candidate will help us in developing our portfolio on custom-made photodetectors integrated with photonic components to realize miniaturized and scalable (quantum) photonics platforms. The work will include development and production, process integration, numerical simulations, sensor design, sensor characterization, funding acquisition and project management. Here you will be part of a project team responsible for delivering high quality R&D and sensor production to our industrial and academic partners. You should have the ambition and capability to take on a role in further developing the technological forefronts and expanding the activities within our group, both on the technical side and the business side.
You should be dedicated and self-motivated, proactive and creative.
We are looking for candidates matching several of the following qualifications:
- Ph.D in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Solid knowledge of semiconductor device physics and fabrication processes
- Experience in design and development of photodetectors based on silicon, germanium, or other semiconductor materials
- Experience in semiconductor device and process simulation tools (TCAD)
- Familiarity with cleanroom environment and CMOS fabrication tools and methods
- Experience in characterization of single-photon detectors
- Knowledge of silicon photonics / photonic integrated circuits
- Familiarity with heterogeneous and monolithic integration / packaging technologies
- Familiarity with applications of photodetectors in quantum sensing, computing and communications
In addition to technical-scientific competence, we are seeking candidates with the following skills and qualifications:
- Team player
- A systematic and goal-driven approach
- High focus on quality
- Ability to take initiative and to generate new ideas
- Ability to develop novel components or concepts
- Ability to interact and work in close cooperation with customers
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English is required. Knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is desirable, but not required.
At SINTEF, we value diversity and encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply to our available positions. To contribute to greater gender balance in STEM research fields, we particularly encourage women to apply for this position.
We offer:
- A position in one of Europe's leading research institutions, with considerable impact on society.
- The opportunity to develop yourself professionally and personally in a recognized and competent research environment.
- A supportive and innovative work environment.
- A dynamic and flexible working day.
- Comprehensive benefits package, including company pension- and insurance, flexible working hours, and competitive salary.
What you need to do:Submit your CV, cover letter and transcript of grades.
