"The present volume is intended to serve a twofold purpose. First, it provides a university text of Linear Programming for students of or operations research interested in the theory of production economics and cost and its practical applications; secondly, it is the author's hope that engineers, business executives, managers, and others responsible for the organization and planning of industrial operations may find the book useful as an introduction to Linear Programming methods and techniques. Despite the different backgrounds of these categories of potential readers, their respective fields overlap to a considerable extent; both are concerned with economic optimization problems, and the use of Linear Programming to problems of production planning is simply applied theory of production. The non-economist reader may, but should not, pass over Chapter IV in which the linear production model is linked up with the economic theory of production. Without being an advanced text, the book aims at covering enough ground to make the reader capable of detecting, formulating, and solving such linear planning problems as he may encounter within his particular field. No heavy demands are made on the reader's mathematical profi ciency; except for the proofs in the Appendix-which may be skipped ü desired-the mathematical exposition is purely elementary, involving only simple linear relations. In the author's experience, the pedagogical advantages of this approach, as compared with the use of matrix algebra, amply justify the sacrilice of mathematical elegance and typographical simplicity, particularly in explaining the simplex method."

Sven Danø, 22.2.1922-10.3.1998, økonom. Sven Danø blev student 1940 fra Ordrup og cand.polit. 1947, s.å. sekretær i generalsekretariatet for regeringens beskæftigelsesudvalg og fra 1.4. i boligministeriet. Fra 1948-56 var han desuden videnskabelig assistent ved Kbh.s univ.s økonomiskstatistiske laboratorium. Sven Danø havde 1950 et studieophold ved Oslo univ. og fik året efter accessit for besvarelse af Kbh.s univ.s prisspørgsmål i statsvidenskab: Hvordan virker stigende nominalløn på reallønnen? 1952 trådte han uden for nr. i boligministeriet og blev universitetsadjunkt i Kbh. til 1958. Han var Rockefellerstipendiat i USA 1954-55 og virkede desuden som gæstelektor ved univ. of Illinois 1958-59. 1959 genoptog Sven Danø sin stilling i boligministeriet og var fra 1960 samtidig lektor ved Kbh.s univ. 1961 blev han fuldmægtig i boligministeriet og tog samme år sin afsked da han foruden lektor også blev amanuensis ved universitetet. 1964 blev han docent. Han blev dr. polit. 1966 på et teoretisk emne inden for driftsøkonomien og kort efter professor i dette fag ved Kbh.s univ. Han beklædte professoratet til 1992. Han var endvidre gæsteprofessor i Kiel 1974-75. Sven Danø blev medlem af Videnskabernes selskab 1983.
Foruden talrige artikler i Nationaløkonomisk Tidsskrift og andre danske og udenlandske fagskrifter navnlig om omkostningsteori og programmering, men også om boligspørgsmålet skrev Sven Danø: Linear Programming in lndustry. Theory and Applications, Wien 1960, Industrial Productions Models (disputats) Wien og New York 1966, Nonlinear and Dynamic Programming, Wien og New York 1975 ofg Investeringsplanlægning, 1988. Sven Danøs litterære produktion har gjort ham kendt også i udlandet som en meget skarpsindig forsker der anvender matematikken til afklaring af driftsøkonomiske problemer med en grundig redegørelse for alle forudsætninger. Som universitetslærer gav han med pædagogisk dygtighed og humor studenterne mulighed for at erhverve en betydelig viden om driftsøkonomiens teori.
