Award Sessionmaster is a rack-mounted guitar direct preamp (for studio use) from the UK. A simple, compact guitar preamplifier, capable of producing both clean and overdriven guitar sounds, with an integral speaker simulator.
Key capabilities: gain/overdrive control, tone/EQ control (bass/mid/treble), speaker simulation (so you can DI into recording console / PA without a full amp + cab). For example: “… three-band passive tone network … integral speaker simulator so that it can be used straight into a recording console.
Drive/Depth or Gain control (for overdrive)
Tone controls: Bass, Middle, Treble (passive network)
Mode switch(es): e.g., “Classic” vs “Rock” gain modes for different overdrive character.
Speaker simulation (“G12T Speaker Simulation”) for direct recording/PA output.
High impedance input suitable for guitars, and line-level or DI outputs.
Power: 15-36V DC 50mA
The rack version of Sessionmaster: The review from “Recording Musician” July 1992 said the original Mark II unit (rack-mount) had been used for studio . It goes on to say it was installed in three studios at Abbey Road Studios.
Why/when you might use one
If you need a direct guitar input for recording or live PA without a full amp+cab, a preamp with speaker simulation like this can be very handy — especially in small studios or dry stage environments.
