In the city of Oeble in the Border Kingdoms, Aeron ser Randal steals a strongbox from a caravan, although the heist goes awry when they encounter magical wards. His companions are killed by the Grey Blades, the law in the city, and Miri Buckman, a ranger from the Red Hart guild hired to deliver the box. Aeron returns to his father, Nicos sar Randal, a retired thief who urges Aeron to choose a different life, although Aeron insists he wants to stay a thief and needs the money to support Nicos’s injuries and infirmities. He was hired to steal the box by Kesk Turnskull, the tanarukk who leads the Red Axes, the largest gang in the city, but decides to renegotiate their deal due to the severity of the protection and the loss of his friends.
