- I bought this camera in ~2010 and still have it. The original battery held charge whole day at the Zoo last summer. I took 114 photos and 22 videos that day. With the original 15 year old battery. It is made in Japan. Leica optics. The build quality is insanely good for the value. I should get few new battery for it still when they are still selling. I would say Lumix FZ300 is "modern" upgrade for this camera with 4k video. I keep still learning new features about the FZ28 it has very versatile adjustments. Manual focus, shutter, etc etc. Everything like in professional camera.
- I particularly like the feature that allows you to increase the zoom past 18x, when using lower resolutions (up to 32x for 3MP). Obviously you could just take the shots at 10MP (at 18x) and then crop the photos down - but this feature saves you cropping and more importantly allows you to take more photos using burst, without filling up your card.
- Getting the FZ instead of a DSLR means I got an excellent and versatile camera with a lens that would mean I would have to get at least 2 and possibly 3 DSLR lenses to cover it's capability. You can also find some filters and extra lenses.
- The 'Starry Sky' facility allows shots of the night sky at 15, 30 secs or 1 minute, which is not a range of exposures usually found on a bridge camera.
- Lumix DMC-FZ28 has a very useful feature which tracks the subject you focussed on, should it happen to move. There is also an Intelligent auto mode which really does make it almost foolproof.
- As with the FZ18, the Intelligent Auto (iA) setting is a dream! Perfect crystal clear pictures under (almost) any conditions, EVERY TIME. a reliable Auto is a good friend in a tight moment.
- The cherry on this cake: FZ28 comes also with a leveling function which helps align buildings or the horizon with the subject - even after taking the picture! (OK, essentially it is cropping but still...)
- The new features of FZ28 include a new sensor (10.1MP/2.33") coupled with the also new Venus IV engine; an enlarged high quality LCD (2.7" from 2.5"); a wider lens system (starting from 27 instead of 28mm - but also ending at 486 instead of 504mm); a new auto-tracking focus feature; an auto backlight compensation function (missing from FZ18) and (finally!) zooming while taking video.
- Wide Angle 27mm F2.8-4.4 (35mm equivalent: 27-486mm) - Compared to a classic 35mm angle, the 25mm Super Wide Angle will allow you to integrate more image into your photo. The 18x Super Zoom helps you search for details farther away.
- PASM Manual Modes - Program AE, Aperture Priority, Speed Priority and Fully Manual modes allow you to adjust the shutter, shutter speed, exposure to any shot.
- HD Video - Shoot your videos in HD and connect the DMW-HDC2 component cable directly to the product to view your movies on an HD display.
- SLR performance at much lower cost and with greatly reduced size.
- Intelligent Auto Mode - AI mode continues to expand and now offers focus tracking to keep the focus ideal no matter what the subject moves.
- LEICA Stabilized Lens, 18x Super Zoom, 27mm Wide Angle, HD Video Mode.
- Macro is fantastic with crystal-clear, well-defined images at as little as 1cm from the target.
- RAW format to get better HDR results.
