Such a weird record, not in the sense that there's any actual weirdness on display, but how good it is without ever being flashy about anything. This is a very standard, traditional Hard Bop sound that you could hear pretty much in any 50s Jazz album from your record score when it comes to style and palette, but somehow, Moanin' stands out so strongly. I think it's kind of a perfect record in a sense, I really do. This is, for what it is trying to do, kind of flawless in execution. The tracks on here are amazing, the instrumentation is tight and precise, the tracklist is the perfect length and pretty much every part of this album keeps my attention. It's so rare and weird for me to find a record that on paper should be "good but a little boring" to me but then end up being head-over-heels for it.
I'm not even sure what it is besides the obvious technical prowess that makes me feel so captivated by this record. I guess it might be the energy too? It feels very enthusiastic, there's enthusiasm oozing out of every player and Blakey's drumming is an obvious standout here, easily some of the best Jazz drumming I've heard from the 50s. Don't have much more to say, it's just instantaneous and yet provides a lot of depth, easily one of the go-to albums when it comes to getting into Jazz I'd say, it's simple enough to not feel detached and yet utterly gripping to hear
