R&D Engineer – Join a Team That Innovates
We are seeking an R&D Engineer with a solid academic foundation — preferably holding a PhD or Master's degree — in a technology or science discipline.
The role focuses on managing the ongoing technology development at IMS, including sensors, systems, and software for real-time fluid analysis applications.
You will work at the core of IMS’ technology evolution, translating complex non-Newtonian fluid behavior into robust algorithms that perform reliably in challenging operational environments.
Key responsibilities:
Plan and manage R&D projects, both hands-on and administratively
Act as the key liaison between IMS, clients, and academic partners
Develop and test new sensors; support their integration into IMS systems
Build and implement models for drilling fluid behavior and analysis
Optimize real-time algorithms for efficiency and reliability
Contribute to advanced features like predictive analytics and machine learning
Work closely with software and hardware engineers
Mange design and perform structured TRL validation programs through commercialisation of product development.
Maintain clear technical documentation and support tech transfer to operations
Qualifications:
MSc or PhD in Technology or Science discipline such Petroleum Technology or Process Technology or Fluid Engineering. Related disciplines such as Applied Mathematics or Computational Science may also be considered
Strong theoretical foundation in rheology and non-Newtonian fluids
Experience in actively testing sensors with practical hands-on involvement.
Proficiency in scientific computing (Python, MATLAB, etc.)
Knowledge of real-time systems, embedded programming, or edge computing applications is advantageous.
Ability to transition from theoretical modelling to practical, field-deployable solutions.
Analytical mindset with excellent problem-solving skills
Fluent in English; conversational Norwegian (A2+) with willingness to improve
Bonus experience (not required):
Experience working with field sensor data or real-world noisy datasets.
Practical exposure to drilling fluids, mud engineering, or drilling operations.
Machine learning applications in physical modelling or data-driven rheology.
