Utgitt av Van Gogh museum i 2007.
This gorgeous book, published by the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, renders the master's most productive years in a way that will appeal to almost any reader - even me. I admit, Van Gogh has never been in the first rank of my favorite artists. That's still true, but this book (and my visit to the museum) bumped him way up in my list.
The format is big but not oversized, so most of the paintings are printed large enough for much of their detail to come through. Colors are bright and clear, and the paper shows each picture without showing the one on the other side of the sheet as well. It's not the same as seeing each piece live, brush strokes, canvas texture, and all, but it's as good as books get. Most of the book covers the magical years from 1885 to 1890, when the works known as "Van Gogh" came to life. He only picked up his pencil about 1880 and his brush a little later, so the book offers samples from those early years, too. That chronology creates a real tension, though. We see his skills and vision develop in many different directions - there was no one "Van Gogh" style - through these years of creation and even some recognition. The text (not that I've read it all) supports this visual narrative with biographical notes and analyses of the works. For anyone who knows Van Gogh's life, these years carry a roller-coaster sense of excitement and involvement, right to the last of his oeuvre.
Then, in 1890, he shot himself and spent two days dying of the wounds. Knowing that end, the story conveys more tension than just its words possibly could. If suicide has ever touched your life, then this headlong rush to brilliance and blackness will tighten your throat as you see the end approach.
