The Hiwatt Echo Theremin is a compact photo-theremin with an integrated delay circuit that combines traditional theremin pitch control with echo-based sound modulation. Designed for both experimentation and performance, the unit generates tones that respond to the proximity of a player's hand to its reflective antenna dome, producing continuously variable pitch changes without direct physical contact. As the hand moves closer to the antenna, the pitch rises; as it moves away, the pitch falls.
The Echo Theremin builds upon the concept of the original 1920 theremin invented by Lev Sergeiyvich Termin (later known as Leon Theremin), augmenting its touchless pitch control with digital delay processing. The onboard delay offers up to 300 milliseconds of echo time, allowing for the creation of spacey, atmospheric, and science-fiction-inspired sound effects. Hiwatt designed the unit for musicians seeking unconventional tones, sound designers, or anyone exploring experimental electronic textures.
Constructed in Japan, the Echo Theremin operates solely on a 9V battery and connects to amplifiers or recording interfaces via a single 1/4" output jack. There is no audio input, making the device a self-contained sound generator rather than a processor for external signals. The pedal's compact format makes it compatible with standard pedalboard setups, though it functions equally well as a desktop sound effect unit. Users can expand its tonal range by routing it through other effects such as volume pedals, wah filters, octave dividers, or ring modulators.
