FOREWORD
The late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories about the great detective, beginning with "A Study in Scarlet" first published one hundred years ago in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887. Taking the world by storm in the 1890s and the early years of the 20th century, Sherlock Holmes quickly became the point of departure for the vast volume of mystery fiction to come, and he remains the ultimate standard against which other detectives in literature are measured today. This collection of new Sherlock Holmes stories by well-known British and American mystery writers, an unprecedented form of homage by modern masters of Sir Arthur's craft, has been commissioned and compiled with the approval and consent of Dame Jean Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur's daughter and his surviving heir.
