Om boken;
The rich myth of ancient Japan tell how the gods created the Eight Islands by stirring the water with a jewelled spear, and then descended to the country they had formed so as to give it life. The Sun Goddess sent her grandson, the first Emperor, from Heaven to South Japan where he rallied his forces and slowly fought his way, moving mostly by sea, to the greta Yamato Plain. There he set up his capital, Ruler who followed him finally gained the loyalty of all the tribal chieftains and eventually brought the country under the control of the Yamato leader.
When the year 660 B.C. was chosen for the foundation of the Japanese race by the reciters of these old language and histories, it was not known that people had been living on the islands for thousands of years before this date. Earlier inhabitants hunted animals and gathered shellfish for food, they were later taught by people coming from Korea the way of growing rice and making metal tools and weapons. These new arrivals probably came peaceably at first, but as the tribes expanded and started to compete for land, a new class of nobles appeared, many whom had crossed into Japan from Korea. They were skilled in horse riding and archery. They built splendid tombs and personal treasures. It was the strongest amongst these who was later called the first Emperor of Japan.
This book blends mythology and religious ideas with the archaeology and recorded history of ancient Japan. It tells a graphic story of the beginnings of this island kingdom, how early Japanese life was lived and what factors helped to form the Japanese culture. The text is enhanced by photographs and line drawings, all of which were prepared b the author.
