Software Engineer

In ABB we have designed and developed a world-first subsea power distribution system capable of reliably delivering 100MW of power at distances of up to 600km from land and down to water depths of 3000m. This hasn’t been done before and was a significant engineering challenge. With this system there is potential for substantial energy savings, with reduced carbon emissions using power from shore and integrating with renewable energy, such as offshore wind.

In ABB Energy Industries we are responsible for the control and protection part of this system, which consists of advanced, specially designed hardware and control electronics that are deployed as an integral part of the sea floor equipment. Control software provides protection, control, and condition monitoring of the power distribution system, and also includes integration with the system topside/onshore.

We are now completing and validating the entire control and protection system in preparation for deployment to specific projects and we are looking for a software engineer who has a passion for developing software for real-time applications.

This is a rare opportunity to join a team that works with exciting technology in a demanding and complex application that addresses the following topics:

• System and Software design, modelling and documentation
• Development of software for real-time control systems
• Integration of software with FPGAs and hardware (PCBAs, sensors, actuators...)
• Communication solutions with Industrial Ethernet, serial communication, CAN bus,...
• Debugging, testing and regression testing
• Setting up and maintaining automated test systems

You should have a University degree in either EE/Control engineering/Software development/computer science with focus on control systems and their software. Relevant experience would be a strength, perhaps from working in R&D or product development of systems with hardware and significant software development. You need to be a team player and motivated to achieve results. Good communications are essential and a curiosity to seek out simple and elegant solutions is an advantage.

• Development of software for real-time systems. This could comprise programming in PLC/Process Control languages (IEC 61131 and similar), Real-time Simulink programming, C/C++ embedded programming and other languages within a programming framework suitable (e.g. ABB 800xA Control Builder, Mathworks® tools, WxWorks® tools,...)
• Development of software for Windows with Visual Studio or other development tools (e.g. ABB 800xA)
• Experience in requirement handling
• Experience in debugging, testing and regression testing
• Experience in setting up and maintaining automated test systems
• Experience with integration of software with FPGA, sensors, actuators, and handling of PCBs and other hardware
• Experience with software modeling and documenting of software and system design
• Communication experience with Ethernet, serial communication, CAN bus,...
• Experience with revision control systems and corresponding ticket handling (preferably TFS) with clearly defined processes

Advantage if the person has specific knowledge and experience on:

• ABB 800xA server
• ABB 800xA – AC800M controller and Control Builder software
• ABB AC 800PEC controller with its development tools
• Subsea control solutions

Ideal candidate should also be an “All-rounder” and good at conceptual thinking. The capability to stretch between software dev as described above and providing sales support/ market and customer interaction is a benefit.
