Job description

The Institute of Clinical Medicine has a vacant position as full Professor or Associate Professor of Medicine (Surgery) (depending on academic qualifications) at the Division of Surgery, Campus Akershus University Hospital, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo. The professorship (100 %) is combined with a part-time (20 %) Senior Consultant position in the relevant clinical surgical department at Akershus University Hospital.

The professorship is open for applications from academic surgeons within all major subdisciplines of general and orthopedic surgery. The clinical part-time position will be in accordance with the successful applicant's subspecialty. The Division of Surgery has several strong research groups, but there is a potential for further advancements of the activities in the groups.

The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in shaping the future development of research and teaching within the university division, and may also, depending on qualifications and interest, be appointed as head of the university Division of Surgery at Campus Ahus.

The clinical Division of Surgery at Akershus University Hospital is subdivided into 10 clinical departments and has research groups in gastrointestinal surgery, vascular surgery, urology, ear-nose-throat surgery, anesthesiology and in quality and patient safety. There is a close cooperation between the Department for Breast and Endocrine surgery and Department of Oncology regarding particularly breast cancer research.

The clinical Division of Surgery runs the Operating theaters (OR) and the Daycare surgery units for the hospital.  The orthopedic surgery disciplines are organized in a separate clinic, which also has strong research groups. Akershus University Hospital houses the Department of Clinical Molecular Biology (Epigen), which is jointly owned by the University of Oslo and Akershus University Hospital. EpiGen maintains its own research profile through the clinical and academic faculty, and provides service and support for external clinicians and scientists to perform translational research of high quality.

Qualifications and personal skills

The successful applicant is expected to strengthen the research activity, either by establishing a new strong research group, or by initiating activities that complement existing research in the Division. She or he should be an active researcher with a strong publication record in high impact journals. Experience with supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows and a proven ability to attract external funding is considered essential. Documented education and experience in university pedagogy will also be considered important. Applicants are expected to have ongoing research activity with high clinical relevance, and to contribute actively to collaborative projects.

Qualification as specialist in general surgery, vascular surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, urology or orthopedic surgery, is a requirement for combining the academic position with the part-time clinical position. Extensive experience in general or orthopedic surgery is mandatory as responsibility for examinations in surgery for medical students at the Campus will be part of the work tasks assigned the position.

The applicant should hold an MD degree and authorization in Norway and have sufficient clinical experience to teach medical students broadly within general surgery or orthopedic surgery.

Applicants who are not yet competent as professor but competent as associate professor are also encouraged to apply. If appointed as associate professor, the person may initially join an existing research group, but she/he should have a plan for independent research activities.

High ambitions and quality of teaching, research and communications is expected.

The successful applicant will have a plan for development of her/his research, and for acquiring externally funded research projects. High quality of research, and publishing in peer-reviewed international journals is expected. The applicant is asked to describe his/her research profile, with respect to strategic plans and existing research at the institute/department.
