Performance Coach

The Performance Coach provides coaching using his/her expertise to all personnel at the worksite. The primary purpose of the role is to ensure our personnel understand their roles and responsibilities and successfully deliver safe, reliable, and efficient operations.  Focus will be on the use of Rig Specific Operating Procedures (RSOPs), procedural discipline, STRIVE Leadership principles, Worksite Leadership and driving continuous improvement through the FORWARD process.

Duties & Responsibilities:                                                                                                                       

  • Ensures that activities and tasks taking place on the unit are performed safely adhering to Rowans policies and procedures.
  • Work together with Rig Manager, customer, OIM to identify performance improvement potential, prioritize projects and mobilize crew to safely improve performance and processes.
  • Act as the FORWARD Leader on the rigs to eliminate waste, improve processes & procedures, and measure value gained through use of Lean methodology.
  • Initiate, develop action plans, manage and report status of FORWARD (continuous improvement) projects, with support from shore-based Performance Team.
  • Hold systematic inquiry / conversation with workers to determine their understanding of effective use of procedures.
  • Lead the charge with evolving the quality and use of new RSOPs on the rig. Conduct task-level reviews of RSOPs to determine whether a barrier is in place and fully functional (i.e. devices, system, or action) and ensure the RSOP is optimized to support efficient operations.
  • Lead after actions reviews to focus on safety (personal and process), reliability (relating to equipment) and efficiency (performance and continuous improvement); ensuring that resulting changes are incorporated back into RSOPs.
  • Monitors rig operations / key performance indicator (KPIs) i.e. BHAs, casing rig ups, running BOPs, etc. and identify Invisible Lost Time (ILT) and opportunities for improvement. Actively communicates the KPIs with the rig personnel to engage in performance discussions.
  • Model and work to in still and reinforce the concept of personal accountability and responsibility regarding safety performance and procedural discipline to crewmembers in support of Rowans Mission and Values.
  • Maintain a strong presence outside rig quarters, especially in high risk, high activity areas (deck, drill floor, lifting operations, etc.), conducting worksite leadership visits, coaching, mentoring to ensure compliance with safe work practices and any stop work authority observations are made promptly.
  • Encourage active participation in the SOAR program by undertaking safety conversations with all persons on board.
  • Mentors crews and Third Parties on Rowans Management System policies and procedures, including, JRA, Control of Work (CoW- Energy Isolation, Confined Space Entry, working at heights, etc.) Participates in JRA development at the job site.
  • Participation in weekly share calls with HSE shore based personnel and customer.
  • Participates and assists the OIM with rig based incident investigations to determine actual, underlying and Root cause(s) using investigation methods, in accordance with company processes.
  • Actively participate as required in safety meetings and operations briefings, supporting job planning and daily instructions with best Practices for rig team and after action reviews.
  • Coach Front Line Leaders/Supervisors on assessing and evaluating crew development level (D1-D4) and competency related to rig performance.
  • Ensures HSE and Performance reporting requirements are completed by those tasked with the reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for escalating HSE issues when required.

Required competence and qualifications:

  • 5 years offshore supervisory experience
  • Preferably offshore experience as minimum assistant driller or barge engineer
  • Independent thinker, self-motivated and strong leader
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of sound rigging practices.
  • Good leadership skills,takes initiatives and adherence to company policies and programs at all times
  • Strong understanding and champion of Rowan HSE processes and procedures
  • Ability to work effectively with all departments of the rig
  • Understanding of FORWARD process and LEAN concepts
