An Alfred Haddad Jezzine Cutlery. This set was made in Jezzine Lebanon, by Sald and Alfred Haddad.
Each bird handle is hand carved from Buffalo Cones (horns) and Camel Bone. The wings are Brass and the Red and Blue Dots are Inlaid Stone. The serving set has Silver Inlay on the Phoenix birds head. This is "Impeccable Workmanship".
Originated in the town of Jezzine in South Lebanon, the traditional cutlery was born in 1770 when the Haddad family settled in that quintessential town. Its production consisted at that time of army rifles, knives and steel blade swords.
In 1930, the Haddad family developed its business by creating handles with birds heads made of bones and buffalo's horns. These handles were inlaid with colored bones & brass and were applied to spoons, forks, Knives, paper-knives, daggers.
The Haddad artisans are highly skilled, and their skills traveled time and make the production of these traditional crafts a family-based profession. What adds tremendous value to these crafts is this family's eye for design and style. This unique traditional craft is so well regarded that it has been presented by Lebanese presidents and officials to dignitaries all over the world beginning with the Ottoman Sultans in the 18th century. These crafts hold within each piece the authentic spirit of Lebanon: History, Culture and Beauty.
Jezzine is still being made, but no longer in the ancient form since the factories were destroyed in the Lebanese Civil War which lasted from the late 1960' to the early 1990's.
The present Jezzine is made of Plastic and crafted in France and the design is very different.
The old Jezzine is Butterscotch Color or Ebony which these are. No two pieces are exactly alike, and some of the heads take on a Butterscotch look where others take on more Ebony in color.
