"The original Portuguese wristwatch was conceived in 1938, following a request from two Portuguese businessmen, Rodriguez and Texeira. They wanted IWC to construct a highly accurate, oversized wristwatch. At the time, wristwatches were quite small by today's standards, case diameters were usually below 33 millimeters in diameter. The requested watch was to be substantially larger. To power this unusual piece, IWC's watchmakers selected the Calibre 74, a hunter-style pocketwatch movement. During the 1940's, IWC sold a relatively small number of other oversized Portuguese watches, but never quite enough to justify large scale production of the pieces.
In 1993, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the company, they again released the Portuguese, this time named the Jubilee. The Jubilee was produced as a limited edition, available in cases of platinum, gold, and steel. Demand was strong, and the edition sold out quickly. Since the re-introduction of the Portuguese was met with enthusiasm, the company has subsequently released a number of other variants, including a minute repeater, a chronograph, and a split-second chronograph. A smaller (approximately 35 millimeter diameter) Portuguese is also available as a standard model in the IWC line.
The Portuguese Automatic, has been made with three movements:
--cal. 50010 => 2.5 Hertz movement, 44 rubies
--cal. 51010 => 3.0 Hertz movement, 44 rubies
--cal. 51011 => 3.0 Hertz movement, modified cogging, 42 rubies"
Og videre om denne klokken;
"When viewing the 5001 s Caliber 51010 (manufactured entirely by IWC), one will immediately note the impressive rotor with gold medallion which powers the movement, which is called the Pellaton system. The Pellaton winding system is IWC s exclusive and unique execution of an automatic winding system. It was developed in the early 1950s by Albert Pellaton (former IWC Technical Director). It differs fundamentally from traditional automatic winding systems (which transmit movement from the rotor via a wheel train to a gear system) with its use of a rocking bar, synthetic jeweled rollers on either side of a heart-shaped cam, and pawl system. While the Pellaton design sounds rather complex, the execution of the design is actually ingenious for its simplicity. The winding system has also been praised for its inherent shock resistance, as well as its ease of maintenance and durability. The Caliber 51010 runs at a impressively 27,000 beats per hour. One of the advantages of using a pocket watch-sized movement is having room for a large winding spring, which gives the 51010 an impressive power reserve. While the spring no doubt is capable of providing a longer running time, it is interesting to note that the movement automatically stops after 168 hours (7 days) to eliminate the danger of isochronism error by having the spring fully unwind. The 44 jewel Caliber 51010 is also equipped with other components only found on the finest watch movements in the world, such as a Breguet overcoil, and a Nivarox 1 chronometer quality balance spring. Clearly great care has been taken to decorate the movement to an aesthet-ic level which matches the engineering prowess of the Caliber 51010.
IWC produserer fortsatt IWC Portugieser Automatic.
