Philosophy
In a copycat world where so much is becoming the same, nothing sounds like a Brady because nothing is built like a Brady.
Chris Brady has never felt the need to duplicate traditional manufacturing techniques used by other established drum manufacturers. Instead, his creations are formed purely on the basis of how a drum should sound - all economic considerations aside.
Corporate entities tend to build drums in their own image, or as replications of what others have done. That´s why Brady has remained relatively small and fiercely independent for 30 years. It`s essential to who we are. As one of the last autonomous well-known drum companies in the world, we can avoid the bureaucracies and red tape that strangle new and innovative ideas. Perhaps that is why - in a world of homogenized instruments - Brady drums are so remarkably, refreshingly different.
From our workshop in rural Western Australia, Chris and his team painstakingly handcraft magnificent native hardwoods into shells of unprecedented sound and quality. Here, craftsmanship is elevated to a fine art form by handcrafting shells into three different styles of construction, each in a class by itself: Ply, Block and Solid.
Chris´ formula for our diverse collection involves a timber´s grain structure, hardness, shell thickness, shell diameter, shell depth and - of course - the unique acoustical characteristics of each of our Australian hardwoods, coupled with the construction method of the shell itself.
Through the use of relatively unknown indigenous Australian timbers and Chris' progressive approach to drum design, we are proud to offer you an exquisite range of drums, created for the discerning musician to enjoy.
Nothing sounds like a Brady because nothing is built like a Brady.
Ply drum shell making
It all starts with individual select-grade plies of indigenous Australian hardwoods in our revolutionary "dry mould" system, which was pioneered by Chris in 1988. Each specific veneer is hand-coated with special epoxy resin glue and pressed into the mould to become a non-cross laminated, 100% horizontally grained ply shell. The "dry mould" system bonds the veneers together through extreme pressure rather than (moisture inducing) conventional steam bending techniques. The clever combination of the epoxy and the "dry mould" system means reinforcement hoops are not necessary on a Brady drum and our shells are guaranteed to never go out of round.
Chris' abstract approach to traditional manufacturing techniques allows us to produce shells with a wide open tone that no mass-produced drum can match. Our ply shells offer a much broader sonic range, with more sustain, more projection, more natural low-end and incredibly wide tuning parameters. Snare drums are distinct, resonant and satisfying; bass drums pack a punch; and toms simply sing.
Finishing process
All drum shells are now drilled and sanded. The shells are sanded from both inside and outside. This is especially time consuming for ply drums in order to clean the shell's surfaces from excess epoxy glue. Following, the bearing edge is cut by hand and the lacquering process begins. Several coats of lacquer are applied, each involving a sanding and curing process in our drying room.
For gloss finishes, the drum will undergo a final hand buffing. All drums are stored as drum shells only and are fitted just before they leave the factory. This involves a final and thorough quality control check. All drums are tuned before they are finally packed and shipped. We ship by worldwide courier service, taking no longer than 5 days to get from us to anywhere in the world.
Celebrated not only for their distinctive sounds, Brady´s Ply Drums enhance the aesthetic appeal of the instrument with a stunning range of exotic timber finishes, certain to keep these drums at the top of the "most wanted" list for the discerning drum collector.
These exotic veneers are an integral part of the drum shell and are available on all sizes of ply snare drums and ply drum kits. You have the option of satin or high gloss finish on all exotic veneer. We use premium lacquers on both types of finish, ensuring they are protected from the environment as well as being maintenance-free. Satin finishes keep the natural look of the timber, whereas gloss finishes are hand-buffed and amplify the depth of the grain structure.
All finishes or exotic veneers are a cosmetic personal preference only and do not affect the sound of the drum. There is no price difference for the different exotic timber finishes, however a high gloss finish is slightly more expensive than a satin finish.
From a superb, woody rim-shot to the clearest pianissimo rolls, a Brady ply shell snare is both dynamic and articulate. Our ply drums have the characteristic volume and projection of the best steel shells, but with a warmth and depth that no metal shell can capture. An expressive instrument with an open, lively sound, our ply shell snare drums respond instantly to even the most subtle stickings.
"The sound it emitted was fast, clean and very cutting, with impeccable response. It was able to articulate with such incredible expression that I could almost imagine myself holding a conversation with it." - Rhythm Magazine
