Primary Metal Commercial technology supports and advice the Hydro business units on issues related both to casthouse production, casthouse products and customer support in addition to develop new casthouse technologies and products. We are organized in three main groups; laboratories with locations in Sunndalsøra, Karmøy and Holland, MI (USA); R&D projects with location in Sunndalsøra and Casthouse Support that have employees located at our main production sites.

R&D projects consist of about 20 researchers, working on process and technology development for casthouse operations, customer support and alloy/product development for various applications within the three product areas Extrusion Ingot, Foundry Alloys and Sheet Ingot.

Area of Responsibility

Run R&D projects on melt treatment and casthouse operations
Support casthouses on topics related to melt treatment and casthouse operations
Cooperation with universities and external research organizations
Develop to be the senior R&D person in charge of all activities related to melt treatment

Qualifications

Master of Science (MSc) degree or similar with at least 5 years of studies in materials science, chemistry, physics, or other relevant areas
Average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Structured, analytical mindset with an interest in new technical solutions
Fluency in English

Additional Information

The successful applicant must agree to take on a PhD position (“Næringslivs” PhD) within the area of melt treatment at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE). Professor Ragnhild E. Aune (DMSE) and Ulf Tundal (Hydro Aluminium) will jointly supervise the PhD project.

The experimental activities to be performed will partly be carried out at NTNU and at the Reference Center casthouse at Sunndalsøra, which is part of the R&D facilities. In parallel to engaging in an organized doctoral study program the applicant will be employed by Hydro at a 20-40% position.
