Fantastisk pen 1948 Ford F-1 Pickup som virkelig vekker interesse og høster beundring. Vi gir ordet til artikkelen om bilen fra Classic Trucks USA, men nevner først at det er satt inn en ny 396 - bygget for å matche BDS 871 kompressoren, nye Mickey Thompson (33x22x15) dekk bak, Carson avtakbar topp, og Chevy 12-bolt positraction bakende med 4:88.
Classic Trucks USA
George Thomas found the engine for this truck hanging from a tree. A friend told him there was a motor in his back yard, and that it had been there for 15 years. When he went to investigate, George discovered a 69 Chevy big-block dangling from a hook and chain on an oak tree. It was soon to become the heard of his '48 Ford.
Both the truck and the engine have gone through serious changes since George got his hands on them. The vehicle itself started out as a U.S. Navy longbed. He bought it in 1990 and though the previous owner had done some minor modifications, the truck had yet to reach its full potential. Using his 26 years of auto body repair experience, George went to work.
He built the entire frame, using an Art Morrison kit to hub the read, and used Mustang II pieces for the front. There are 31-inch ladder bars and an Art Morrison Panhard bas as well. Rear suspension comes courtesy of AXO coilover shocks. In the front, George swapped in a Michael Thomas Enterprises Mustang ll kit, which includes drop spindles and springs. This truck has four-wheel disc brakes with Kevlar brake lines, and a Volvo power booster. Once George got the engine out of the tree, he did a full restoration with some help. Bell & Gaines, in Modesto, California, began by machining the 396 0.040 over, giving the motor a new displacement of 402 ci. That's a lot of hole to file, but George had a plan. That plan was based on placing a call to Blower Drive Service. A short time later, the big-block Sported a shiny new BDS 871 supercharger. The huffer is spun with a 5-percent overdrive providing l2 pounds of boost and is fed with twin Carter 750-cfm carbs.
A BDS intake manifold holds the blower to the block, and a BDS Scoop air cleaner sits on top. Inside the block, a steel nitrite crankshaft is connected to the 7.25:1 Keith Black pistons with a set of KB rods. A BDS Stage 4 Cam bumps the rockers while it takes the likes of MSD Billet electronic ignition with Taylor wires to light the fire. The assembly balanced flywheel is S.F.I. approved. A 9-quart oil pan resides underneath; its another handmade creation, which works with the Mellìng high-volume oil pump. In addition, George installed a Sommers Brothers timing chain. The '69 heads, getting the royal treatment, have been ported, polished, cc'ed, and O-ringed.
There are 2-inch 250 intake and 194 chrome-moly exhaust valves, with Teflon guides. George used Vasco let 230-pound double valvesprings and Crane rollers. Other engine modifications include a Brass Works water pump, a Hayden fan, and billet valve covers and breathers. Spitting out the nasties are Hooker headers that connect to lowback mufflers and a 3-inch tube. The entire exhaust system is made of chrome. All this adds up to a claimed 800 horses with 600 of torque.
Attached to the back of this monster are a GM Turbo 350 and a torque Converter made by the Converter Shop with a stall speed of 2,800 rpm. Ad Tech Transmissions in San Jose, California, made the valvebody and did all of the transmission modifications. The 350 is connected to the rear end with a custom drive shaft that was fabricated by the Rettig Brothers in Modesto, California.
The body has been radically altered from its Navy days, as you can see. George took 3 inches off the top, sectioned the body 6 inches, and channeled it 4. He narrowed the front fenders by 2 inches and removed the running boards. He did the paint job himself, using Martin Seniour Red on the front and the same brand for the black splash effect on the rear end. Borrowing from a variety of vehicles, George used tail lights from a '50 Lincoln, back window glass from a '29 Model A, and wheel tubs from a '71 Chevy. He put Moon Eyes in the front and shaved the door handles. As another interesting feature, George converted a beer keg into the truck's gas tank and installed that in the bed.
The customization didn't Stop there. On the inside, there is a custom dash, fitted with Auto Meter gauges and a Pioneer CD player. He hid the speakers in the door panels and swapped in a LeCarra steering wheel. Mariposa Auto Trim helped him with the tweed almond upholstery. Mercedes tan carpet and tan velour headliner. Finishing off this truck are Weld Draglìght wheels, in front, and 15x15 in the rear. (Did we mention that this trucks name is Fattso?) George is running Mickey Thompson tires in front and Hoosiers in back since they were the only ones he could find that were the right size.
And here you See the final product. It started out as part Navy truck, part junk in a back yard. After nine years of work, this '48 is a truly great classic that stands out wherever it goes.
