Next week´s car on the show is a personal favourite of mine, a genuinely affordable supercar with a great racing heritage: the Renault Alpine A310.
During the 1960´s and 70´s Jean Redelé´s Dieppe-based concern became frontrunners in most branches of the sport, producing a succession of competitive single seaters which propelled the likes of Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Patrick Depailler and Francois Cevert to Grand Prix stardom; whilst in Sports Car racing the marque consistently punched above its weight with smaller capacity engines, before taking victory in the 1978 Le Mans 24 hour race.
The discipline in which they truly excelled however, was rallying, their A110 sweeping all before it in French national races, and claiming the inaugural World Rally Championship in 1973. The A310 first appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971, with aggressive styling that left little doubt as to its purpose - this truly was a street legal racecar.
Indeed such futuristic angularity provided a striking contrast to its curvaceous predecessor and has continued to divide opinion through the years - one man´s bold and enduring modernist statement is another´s piece of retro kitsch. Of course I´m firmly in the former camp - never have I seen a car so unapologetically purposeful in appearance, a car that somehow manages to appear both muscular and sleek simultaneously, and if some say it looks like it´s just driven out of an episode of Gerry Anderson´s UFO, then dye my hair blonde and call me Commander Straker - the future, as it looked in 1971, suits me just fine.

Indeed, if the car hasn´t aged gracefully then perhaps that´s because it was never intended to age at all: the A310 looks dangerous, and sure enough, it is. With a 2.7 litre V6 Renault engine hanging out beyond the rear axle the car shares a prodigious reputation for unforgiving handling with the early Porsche 911, so when that tail kicks out on a corner, remember that the only deformable structure present is your legs, and all that stands between them and the rapidly approaching tree is a sheet of polyester bodywork.
On the racetrack Alpine had created another winner, and though the A310 never quite scaled the heights of the A110, it was still highly successful in both rallies and on tarmac, remaining so in the hands of privateers for many years. The roadgoing version was every bit as exciting and it´s a little mystifying to me that it has remained relatively unsung, for here one could obtain a supercar for one third the price of a contemporary Laborghini - all I can think is that perhaps the answer lays with that striking polyester visage?
