MSCA Fellow – Digital technologies for smart flexible industry

Research group for Automation, Robotics and Intelligent Systems (ARIS) at the Department of Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering, and in close collaboration with the Artificial Intelligence research group at the Department Computer Science.

OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University (former HiOA) is Norway’s third largest university, with more than 20,000 students and over 2000 employees. We conduct research in areas that are important for welfare and value creation, for instance health, education, social sciences, technology and design. OsloMet offers a stimulating academic environment with a variety of welfare schemes.

MSCA Fellow – Digital technologies for smart flexible industry

Call for Expression of Interest for mutual application under the Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Individual Fellowship scheme

We hereby invite for top-class researchers of any nationality (at any stage in their career) in the study of digital technologies for smart flexible industry to apply for an EU-funded Marie Sklodowska Curie Action Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF) to conduct research at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University for a period of 1-2 years. The topic is timely aligned with the digital revolution of the industry and OsloMET ‘s strategic initiatives on Digital Engineering with Simula and IBM Watson, and our research projects on Industry 4.0.

Area of research

Condition-based predictive maintenance enables proactive planning and execution of process equipment maintenance, thus shortening the annual downtime and personal risk, and decreasing the related costs. In this project we aim at investigating new approaches for predictive maintenance of machines and systems and applications in flexible smart industry, smart buildings, smart cities, and other. Traditionally, condition-based predictive maintenance uses probability models, whereas newer approaches apply real-time sensor monitoring, advanced modelling, and Machine Learning. The research aim of this project is to build a Digital Twin model of a smart industrial plant, and combine this with both existing and advanced approaches for condition-based predictive maintenance. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with an industrial partner. We invite applicants to propose more detailed topics within the scope of this research as a part of their application (see below).

The successful candidate will participate in the research group for Automation, Robotics and Intelligent Systems (ARIS), and collaborate with the Associate Professors and PhD fellows in the group. Please read more about the research group HERE.

With this call for Expression of Interest, we invite researchers to submit their resumé (including publication list) and a short project description, that will be the basis for selecting a maximum of three candidates with which we will collaborate in developing competitive MSCA-IF proposals. In this first phase, the cooperation will be carried out remotely, but with regular email and Skype communication, and one physical meeting, if convenient. If applicants are successful, the place of work will be at the Department of Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering, OsloMet at the main campus in the center of Oslo.

Starting Date

The EU informs the results on the MSCA-IF applications in January 2019.  Successful candidate(s) are expected to be available to start within the following 3 months.

Main duties of the position

He/ she will be an equal member of ARIS and participate in the activities of the research group in general, take part in regular technical meetings and be able to propose research activities, and be introduced with the group’s national and international network of researchers and associated partners in industry and academia.

We are looking for applicants who have

The candidates must as a minimum have a PhD in Electrical Engineering or Automation, however, we are primarily looking for more senior candidates who wish to use this period as an opportunity to further develop their research and establish longer-term research collaborations with OsloMet and other institutions that are active in the field. The candidates must be assessed as in principle eligible for a Marie Curie Individual fellowship.

We are looking for applicants who acquire

  • Expertise in predictive maintenance. Excellent mathematical skills, knowledge and experience with modeling and simulation.
  • Extensive knowledge and programming experience in at least some of the following: MATLAB, C/ C++/ C#, Java, Java Script, Python.
  • Knowledge within wireless technologies, remote monitoring, and IoT will be an advantage.
  • An excellent track record in research, necessary for being able to develop a competitive Marie Curie Fellowship application.
  • An open and cooperation-oriented nature combined with strong abilities for independent academic work.

It is important for OsloMet to reflect the population of our region, and all qualified candidates are welcome to apply. We make active efforts to further develop as an inclusive workplace and to adapt the workplace if required.
